14. What if I don’t have my accident report yet?

If you don’t have your accident report yet, that’s completely okay—many victims reach out long before they’ve been able to track it down. In fact, not having the report is one of the most common reasons people contact National Victims Assistance Services in the first place. Crash reports can be confusing to locate, especially when you’re not sure which police department responded, whether the report has been filed yet, or how long the agency takes to release it. An advocate can step in right away, gather the basic details of your accident, and help identify the correct law‑enforcement agency so the report can be retrieved as soon as it becomes available.

The organization handles the process of locating and obtaining the report at no cost to you. All you typically need to provide is the date of the accident, the general location, and the names of anyone involved. From there, an advocate can determine which department handled the incident and monitor the status of the report. This saves you from having to make multiple calls, navigate agency websites, or guess where the paperwork might be.

Even without the report, you can still receive guidance on what steps to take next—whether that involves starting an insurance claim, documenting injuries, or understanding what information you’ll eventually need. The goal is to make sure you’re supported from the very beginning, not just after the paperwork is complete. So if you don’t have your accident report yet, you’re still fully eligible for help, and an advocate will walk you through the entire process.
