8. What happens when I text “VICTIM#” or “HELP#”?

When you text “VICTIM” or “HELP” to the number provided by National Victims Assistance Services, the system immediately acknowledges your message so you know your request has been received. This first reply is automated, but it serves an important purpose: it confirms that your information is in the queue and that an advocate will be reaching out. For many people, especially those who are shaken or unsure what to do after a crash, that quick confirmation provides a sense of reassurance that help is on the way.

Shortly after the initial acknowledgment, a victims advocate reviews your message and contacts you directly. Their goal is to understand what happened, what you need, and how they can support you. They may ask for basic details such as the date and location of the accident, whether you have a crash report, or what challenges you’re currently facing. From there, they begin guiding you through the next steps—whether that means helping you obtain your crash report, explaining insurance procedures, or determining whether you may qualify for compensation programs.

The texting system is designed to be simple and accessible, especially for people who may not be in a position to make phone calls or fill out long forms. It gives victims a fast, low‑stress way to reach out for help and ensures that an advocate can begin assisting them as quickly as possible.
